LAPLUME, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy was able to grind out a split in a CSAC Doubleheader at Keystone on Monday, winning the second game, 4-3, after dropping the first, 7-4. In that second game, head coach Ron Smull recorded his 100th career coaching victory.
The Griffins got a go-ahead RBI single with two outs from sophomore Megan Kelly (Ivyland, Pa./Little Flower) in the top of the seventh to break a 3-3 tie and to go on and snap a seven game winless streak.
Down 3-1 going into the fifth, Gwynedd rallied to knot things up with one swing of the bat as sophomore MaryKate Ballerino (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) smacked her third homerun of the season, this one a two-run shot.
Senior Maria Seserko (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) had two hits, including an RBI double in the first.
Junior Jennifer Whalen (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) picked up her first win of the season, scattering two earned runs on 10 hits, with two walks and four strikeouts.
In game one, Seserko would double home Ashley Lamont (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) in the second for a 1-0 lead, but the Giants (7-15, 4-10 CSAC) answered in the bottom half of the frame with six runs on eight hits and two errors.
Gwynedd would have runners in scoring position in both the fourth and sixth innings, but were unable to get them home. GM would make things interesting in their last at-bat in the seventh, as Ballerino went deep and later Kelsey McDonough (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower) added a two-run shot and suddenly it was a three-run game.
Keystone's Karissa Worobey would get a line out to end it. She would strike out five, walk two, while allowing three earned runs on eight hits. At the plate, she was 2-for-4 with an RBI double.
Lamont also fanned five, but just walked one. Only three of the seven runs were earned as well.
McDonough finished with three hits.
Smull, in his eighth season, is looking to guide the Griffins to the playoffs for the fourth time and for the second year in a row.
The Griffins (7-18, 7-5 CSAC) return to action on Wednesday when they play at Rosemont for two starting at 3 p.m.
