true 4 NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The Gwynedd Mercy Softball Team got their 2014 season underway with a trip to South Carolina to play in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic last week.
The Griffins took on some tough competition, coming up winless and having a game rained out, but are looking to get the gears grinding once they get back to Pennsylvania.

BOX SCORE Game 1 | BOX SCORE Game 2In the season opener for both teams, the Warriors were able to take two from the Griffins. In game one, the Griffins battled back from a 6-0 deficit, taking an 8-6 lead into the seventh. But a key error in that seventh with two outs capped Lycoming's three runs to win it. Sophomore
Kelsey McDonough (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower) went 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBI's and a walk.
Alexis Deal (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock South) also added two RBI's. Game two saw the Warriors use a five-run second to erase a 2-0 GM lead. The Griffins were held to four hits.
St. Catherine 11, Gwynedd 2
BOX SCORENext up was NAIA St. Catherine out of Kentucky, where the Patriots plated four runs in the second and third to get out early. Deal had the hot bat for Gwynedd, going 3-for-3 with a two-run double in the fifth.
York 12, Gwynedd 3
BOX SCOREThe Spartans pounded out 15 hits in the game. Gwynedd would score two runs on errors in the second and on an RBI single from freshman Sarah Rosetti (Norristown, Pa./Norristown).

BOX SCOREThe Purple Raiders broke open a close game, using a five-run sixth. GM was held to just four hits. Sophomore
Ashley Lamont (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) was 1-for-3 with a double and a stolen base.
Ferrum 13, Gwynedd 1
BOX SCOREThe Gwynedd bats were kept silent, totaling three hits off Panther starter Amanda Roberts. Lamont would double and score the lone Griffin run in the second inning.
St. Catherine 13, Gwynedd 2
BOX SCOREA rematch from Tuesday's game, nearly had a similar result as the Griffins would close out play. Deal would have an RBI double, and later score in the first for a 2-0 lead. The Patriots would answer with five in the first and a seven-spot in the second.
Gwynedd-Malone, PostponedThe final game of the trip was cancelled to due rain.
Overall, Deal would lead the team in hits (7) and RBI's (5) while Lamont and
MaryKate Ballerino (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) each scored four runs.
The team will try to have their home opener on Saturday when they welcome Widener in a doubleheader starting at noon.
