BOX SCORE

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Junior goalie Jess Tadley (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) made six saves and big two stops in the shootout as third-seeded Gwynedd Mercy advanced in the 2014 CSAC Tournament, getting by sixth-seeded Neumann in first-round action Monday night in penalty kicks, 3-1.

Both teams were scoreless in regulation, and will officially go into the record books as a 0-0 tie.

The Griffins (11-6-2) now advance to the semifinal round, where they'll play at second-seeded Centenary on Wednesday with a tentative start time of 2 p.m.

Tadley, who earlier in the day was named a first-team All-CSAC selection, picked up her sixth shutout of the season. She would make five of her stops in the second half.

Gwynedd fired off seven first-half shots, getting some good scoring looks in the process. In the 31st minute, junior Theo Horozoglou (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) had a good look as a cross found her foot just inside the middle of the 18, but her one touch attempt went wide left.

The Knights (7-8-2) had four shots in the first 45 minutes, but a 6-4 corner kick edge. Both teams were aggressive as a total of five offsides were called between the two teams.

Later in the second, Horozoglou again picked up a pass in the box but her attempt was blocked out of bounds. With 20:48 to go, the Griffins were awarded a free kick 30 yards out and Kerri Petroski (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower) sent a shot that sailed high over the cage.

Neumann posted six shots in the second, but all were denied from Tadley, as she would record her 20th career clean sheet.

With two periods of extra time unable to decide a winner, the teams moved into the shootout with the Griffins going first. Senior Casey Gaughan (Philadelphia, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) went first and buried the first attempt. Neumann's Tonia Russo countered with a goal on the Knights' first chance. Neumann ahd a chance to steal one, as Petroski 's attempt in the next round sailed over the crossbar.

Tadley then made stops on the next two attempts, including a nice diving stop to her left from a shot by Becca Burkhart.

After the go-ahead score from junior Megan Gifford (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic), freshman Meghan Petroski (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower), the newly named CSAC Rookie of the Year, buried her attempt for some insurance and a 3-1 lead. Needing a goal to continue the shootout, Neumann's Alexa DeRose sent her try up and over the crossbar to seal the outcome.
