BOX SCOREGWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Red Hawks of Montclair State University handed the Griffins a 4-1 loss on Saturday afternoon to close out the regular season. From here, the Griffins (13-5, 6-1 CSAC) will host Neumann University in a CSAC Tournament Semifinal matchup on Wednesday.
The Red Hawks got up early in the first half when sophomore Gianna Monglino (Holmdel, NJ/ Holmdel) found sophomore Danielle Butrico (South Plainfield, NJ/ South Plainfield) in front of the cage to go up 1-0. The Griffins would answer back shortly after, when
Stephanie Bacho (Cinnaminson, NJ/ Holy Cross) would find the back of the cage following a corner to tie up the score at 1-1.
Even at the break, the Griffins narrowly outshot the Red Hawks 6-5 and took the advantage in corners at 8-2.
Butrico and Moglino would strike again when the pair would repeat their connection from the first half to put the Red Hawks up 2-1 early in the second. The Red Hawks would score two more to go up 4-1 when Moglino would find the back of the cage after recieving a pass from senior Abby Erler (New Hampton, NH/ Newfound) and Butrico would notch a hatrick after scoring off a pass from junior Maura Johnston (Montville, NJ/ Montville). The Griffins were unable to find the back of the cage for the remainder of the game as the Red Hawks went on to outshoot them 13-7 overall.
Senior goaltender for the Griffins,
Kelly Kruk (Phoenixville, Pa./ Methacton), would close out the day with four saves. Red Hawk goaltender Rebecca Brattole (Clark, NJ/ Arthur L. Johnson) would also record four in the win.
The CSAC Tournament Semifinal matchup will be Wednesday at 7 p.m. when the Griffins host #3 Neumann University.
