BOX SCORE vs. Neumann | BOX SCORE vs. Immaculata
ASTON, PA. -- The Gwynedd-Mercy College Softball Team survived through two close games on the first day at the 2013 CSAC Tournament on Friday, but remained alive to play on Saturday.
The Griffins lost their first game of the day, to the top-seeded and host Knights of Neumann, 3-0, but rebounded with a 2-1 win over Immaculata.
Gwynedd will now advance to play on Saturday at 10 a.m. against Keystone. The winner will move on the championship against Neumann at 12 p.m.
Against Neumann, both teams were locked in a pitcher's duel as the Knight's Lauren Wilkie and the Griffin's
Ashley Lamont (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) were able to keep the game scoreless through six. The Knights broke through in the bottom of the sixth as Mariah Ripken knocked in two runs as part of a three-run frame.
Wilkie fanned six while allowing four GM hits. Lamont yielded the three runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out two.
In the elimination game with Immaculata, freshman
Kelsey McDonough (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower) came through with a huge two-run single in the sixth to take the lead for good.
The Mighty Macs would finally strike for a run in the fifth after leaving runners on in the second, third, and fourth innings. With runners on first and second, Lamont would enter in relief of starter
Kaitlyn Johnson (Milford, N.J./Delaware Valley). After a infield single would load the bases, IU's Samantha Strickland's sac fly to center allowed the game's first run to score.
In the sixth, a leadoff single from
Megan Kelly (Ivyland, Pa./Little Flower) followed by a double of the bat of
Stephanie Farrar (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) put runners at second and third with no outs. Lamont would groundout to short, but neither runner was able to advance. McDonough then stepped in and fought through a 13-pitch at-bat to single off of the first baseman's foot to drive in Kelly and Farrar.
Lamont would get out of a jam in the bottom of the sixth with two on, but got a grounder to third to end the threat. IU tried again in their final at-bat, getting one-out single, but Lamont and the Griffins ended with a 6-4-3 double play.
McDonough had two of the six GM hits. Johnson allowed one run on four hits through 4.1 innings to pick up the win. Lamont threw 2.2 of scoreless softball to earn the save.
