GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy defeated Cairn, 97-63, Tuesday night in both teams' Colonial States Athletic Conference opener.
The Griffins (3-2, 1-0 CSAC) used double-digit scoring from four players with junior
Colin Gates (Boca Raton, Fl./Grandview Prep) leading the way with 14 points.
Justin Knight (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest) added 13 while
Arron Goodman (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) collected his fourth double-double of the season, finishing with 11 points and 12 boards. Freshman
Tom Catanoso (Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Twp.) added 10 points off the bench.
Justin Lewis had 11 points for the Highlanders (0-4, 0-1 CSAC). Obed Rivera, Darnell Clowney, and Omar Askia each had 10 points respectively.
Gwynedd shot 66.7% in the first half (20-of-30) and used a 26-4 run to open the game. Gates hit the eighth three-pointer of the stanza with 4:15 before the break to give GM a 57-18 lead. The Griffins would lead 63-25 at halftime and be in total control the rest of the way.
Four players had five or more rebounds as GM dominated the glass, 52-19. Goodman, Gates (seven), and sophomores
Julian Hyden (Trevose, Pa./Bensalem) and
Brian Hennessey (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) each grabbed five. Hennessey also dished out a career-high five assists.
The Griffins are off until Monday when they head to Radnor, Pa. to square off with the four-time conference champs in Cabrini for a doubleheader with the women.
