BOX SCORE
GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- A go-ahead bucket with 54 seconds left plus key free throws down the stretch helped Gwynedd-Mercy fight off Rosemont, 86-80 in a Colonial States Athletic Conference Game Wednesday evening at the Griffin Complex.
Freshman
Larry Jones III (Woodbine, N.J./Holy Spirit) tough put back in the lane off a three-point miss helped break an 80-80 tie. Four free throws from sophomore
Justin Knight (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest) in the final 26 seconds helped the Griffins (9-8, 8-2 CSAC) snap a two-game skid.
Knight (16 points, 12 in the second half) was one of four Griffins to hit for double digits. Senior
Frank Champion (Northfield, N.J./Mainland) scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds and
Brendan Stanton (Harleysville, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) chipped in 12. Sophomore
Colin Gates (Boca Raton, Fl./Grandview Prep) netted 10 points in his first start of the year.
Derrick Carter led all scorers with 20 points. Kiwan Murray added 14 and Justin Chaney contributed 12 for the Ravens (8-10, 3-9 CSAC), who dropped their seventh in a row.
The Griffins would jump out to a 7-0 lead in the first, and would lead again by seven (14-7). A three-pointer from Stanton gave GM a 34-25 edge with just over three minutes in the half, but back-to-back treys from Derrick Carter shrunk the lead to three. Carter would hit again from deep with 36 seconds left for a one-point game but Gwynedd countered as
Tom McKeefery (North Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May) hit a baseline jumper with five ticks, sending the Griffins up 39-36 at halftime.
In the second, Gwynedd led by as much as 15 when Stanton again struck from deep to cap a 16-4 run for a 66-51 lead with just over 10 minutes to play. The Ravens hung around and were able to whittle the Griffin lead to single-digits. Down nine with 3:14 remaining, Rosemont put together a 13-4 run to eventually knot the contest up at 80-80 all on a three-pointer from Chaney. Jones put GM ahead for good with his layup.
Rosemont connected on 11 treys, while shooting 51.9% (27-of-52) for the game. Gwynedd was 30-of-68 (44.1%) and 5-for-20 from downtown, but won cleaned up the glass in a 41-33 advantage. GM forced 18 turnovers which led to 30 Griffin points.
Freshman
Tyler Barnes (New Egypt, N.J./New Egypt) pulled down eight boards to lead Gwynedd.
The Griffins are back in action on Saturday when they play at Centenary in a 2 p.m. start.
