GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd-Mercy defeated Cairn 84-45 Saturday afternoon to continue their undefeated streak in CSAC league play. The win also caps off a 3-0 week for the Griffins as well.
GM placed four players in double figures as all four scored 10 points apiece. Sophomore
Justin Knight (Mays Landing, N.J. / Oakcrest) and the trio of freshmen
Larry Jones III (Woodbine, N.J. / Holy Spirit),
Brian Hennessey (Philadelphia, Pa. / Father Judge) and
Shawn Wilson (Pleasantville, N.J. / Pleasantville) balanced out the Griffins scoring.
Leading early 9-5 the Griffins would use a 13-0 run capped off by a
Frank Champion (Northfield, N.J. / Mainland) layup to put Gwynedd up 22-5 with 13:27 reaming in the first half. The Griffins would take their largest lead of the half (48-25) just before the break with a Jones layup. Gwynedd forced sixteen first-half Highlander turnovers which converted to 23 points on the other end of the floor to give them a 21-point advantage heading into the break.
Wilson scored seven of his 10 points in the second half, as his key bucket with 6:19 remaining off of an offensive rebound, stretched the lead to 74-42. Gwynedd had thirteen players contribute in the point column for the game. The Griffins held Cairn to 34.8% shooting in the second half
Gwynedd shot 44.4% (32-of-72) for the contest and connected on nine three pointers. The Highlanders hit on 40.0% (18-of-45) from the floor.
GM outrebounded Cairn 41-28. Freshman
Tyler Barnes (New Egypt, N.J. / New Egypt) led the Griffins with seven rebounds while sophomore
John Davis (Douglassville, Pa. / Daniel Boone) grabbed six. Barron Lacy led the Highlanders with six caroms.
Cairn was led by Aaron Stovall who led all scorers with 15 points.
The Griffins return back to action on Wednesday as they continue their home stand against Cabrini in an 8 p.m. tip-off.
