GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd-Mercy defeated Wesley, 2-1, Saturday afternoon in the opening game of the 2012 Griffin Classic. 

After a scoreless first half, the Wolverines struck in first twenty three seconds into the second with a breakaway goal scored by Kelly Edmunds at the 45:23 mark.  

The Griffins would chip away, tying the game at 1-1 on a goal by junior Maura Gifford (North Wales, Pa. / Lansdale Catholic) on a beautiful pass from sophomore Casey Gaughan (Philadelphia, Pa. / Villa Joseph Marie) at 53:46.

GM would use the momentum of the goal and dominate offensive play over the next seven minutes, capitalizing on another beautiful cross in the box scored by senior Meghan Bojanowski (Philadelphia, Pa. / St. Hubert) assisted by freshman Megan Gifford (North Wales, Pa. / Lansdale Catholic) at the 60:13 mark.  The Griffins defense held strong holding Wesley to only two shots the rest of the game to secure the victory.

Freshman goalie Jess Tadley (Cherry Hill, N.J. / Cherry Hill West) recorded two saves for GM.  Her counterpart, Sydney Kahan stopped four for the Wolverines (3-1-1).

The Griffins (2-2) outshout Wesley, 11-8.  Both teams drew even in corners at four apiece.

With the win Gwynedd improves to 2-2 on the young season.  The Griffin Classic will continue tomorrow with Wesley facing Delaware valley at 10 a.m. and The Griffins will square off against Muhlenberg thirty minutes following the first game.  Live stats and video will be available for both contests.
