GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd-Mercy scored twice in the second half to go on and defeat Alvernia, 3-1, on Saturday.

Senior Kelsey Deveney (Dalton, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) had a goal and an assist as the Griffins played with heavy hearts.  The team was playing for former GMC Field Hockey Player Kristy Kelleher, who tragically lost her life this summer in an auto accident.

Junior Sarah Jackson (Sewell, N.J/Washington Twp.) and freshman Katie O'Neill (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) also scored for the Griffins (4-2).

Goalie Kelly Kruk (Phoenixville, Pa./Methacton), who recorded seven saves, along with the GM defense withstood a late Alvernia attack, as the Crusaders were awarded six penatly corners in the last seven minutes of the game.

Jackson made it 1-0 midway in the first as she buried a pass sent in by Deveney up and over Alvernia keeper Wein Wunsch, but Alvernia (3-2) answered just over a minute later as Kyle Dillman scored on a penalty corner.

The Crusaders almost took a one-goal lead right before halftime with 20 ticks left. A shot off the stick of Lauren Guido beat Kruk but found the post.

Gwynedd would score twice in a three-minute span early in the second to help pull away. O'Neill would score in the 44th minute while Deveney and the Griffins worked another penalty corner goal for a two-goal cushion.

The Griffins will play at Delaware Valley College on Monday beginning at 4 p.m.
