GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. – Top-ranked College of New Jersey posted a 4-1 win over Gwynedd-Mercy in field hockey action Thursday night.
Jillian Nealon scored a pair of goals for the Lions (4-0), who scored four unanswered tallies in the win.
The Griffins (3-2), who had their three-game win streak snapped, jumped on the board early as senior
Kelsey Deveney (Dalton, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) scored her third goal on the year, connecting on a penalty corner with an assist from junior
Sarah Jackson (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) just 3:47 into the contest.
Nealon tied it in the 12th minute as her pass across from the right baseline deflected off a GMC defender and into the net. Seven minutes later, she would again use another deflection, this time one of her own, off a shot from teammate Erin Healy to take a 2-1 lead, which stood up until the end of the half.
Healy would add the third goal as she converted on a penalty corner 10 minutes into the second stanza.
Gwynedd had some trouble generating some offense in the second, recording just one shot, but it nearly led to a score. Junior
Maria Karidas (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock South) looked to cut it to a one-goal game, but her shot up close went wide right with just over eight minutes remaining.
The Lions closed out the scoring on a goal from Erin Waller on another penalty corner as time expired.
TCNJ outshot the Griffins, 14-4, and posted 10 penalty corners (seven in the second half).
GMC goalie
Kelly Kruk (Phoenixville, Pa./Methacton) recorded nine saves
Gwynedd-Mercy hosts Alvernia on Saturday in a 3:30 start. Prior to the game, the team will honor
Kristy Kelleher, a former teammate.
