GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. – Gwynedd-Mercy held off Notre Dame (Md.), 14-12, in a 2012 CSAC Tournament First-Round Game Saturday afternoon.
The third-seeded Griffins (8-9) now move on to the semifinal round where they'll play at #2 Cabrini on Wednesday, May 2nd at 6:30 p.m.
Senior
Brigid Dowling (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower) tied a career-high with six goals while
Shannon Carabba (Erdenheim, Pa./Springfield) added two scores and two assist as the defending conference champions advance.
A string of five-straight goals midway in the first broke a 4-4 tie and helped GM catapult to a 9-4 lead. Gwynedd would take an 11-7 lead at the half.
Allison Terry, who posted a game-high seven goals for the Gators (8-8), helped keep things close in the second. She would set up teammate Molly Murray with 8:14 left to make it a two-goal game. Dowling answered with a tally just over a minute later before Murray struck again with 6:09 remaining to make it 14-12.
From there, the Griffin defense, led by goalie
Marina Hubbard (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower), turned away two scoring chances late in the contest to pull it out. The freshman would finish with nine saves, seven of which came in the second half.
Senior
Morgan Hosler (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) added a goal and an assist to help the Griffins to the semifinal round for the ninth-straight season.
Murray finished with three scores for the Gators. Goalie Mary Briggs recorded five saves in net.
