GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. – Sophomore
Stephanie Farrar (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) hit a walk-off homerun in extra innings in game one to highlight a split with Cedar Crest in CSAC action on Senior Day. The Griffins won the first game, 10-9, in eight innings while falling in a wild one in game two, 24-17.
The team and coaching staff honored their two seniors,
Ali Gurko (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) and
Nicole Paleologus (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) with a pre-game ceremony.
GM, who battled back from a 7-1 deficit in game one, ended it as Farrar led off the eighth with her fourth homer of the year. She finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Gurko also added a solo homerun as she was 4-for-5 with four stolen bases and three runs scored.
Alyson Mason knocked in three runs and added two doubles for the Falcons.
The Griffins plated three in the third and three in the fourth to knot it up at 7-7. Gurko's solo shot to lead off the fifth temporarily gave Gwynedd their first lead. Mason answered with a two-run double in the sixth.
Freshman
Jennifer Whalen (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) scored on a sac fly from Paleologus bottom half of the sixth. Whalen also had four hits in game one.
Starter
Kaitlyn Johnson (Milford, N.J./Delaware Valley) got out of two jams in extra innings as Cedar Crest had two runners on in each the seventh and eighth.
In game two, was an offensive explosion for both teams, as the two combined for 41 runs on 45 hits. The Griffins led 13-9 after the fourth before Cedar Crest plated 11 in the fifth on seven hits and an error to take the lead for good.
Junior
Tegan Wendell (Glenside, Pa./Abington) was 5-for-6 with five RBIs, four runs and three triples. Farrar added a pair of triples to go along with her three hits and four knocked in.
Mason was the big hitter for Cedar Crest, going 4-for-6 with five RBIs and two runs scored.
After GM scored three in the sixth to cut it to 20-16, Mason and Cedar Crest scored some unearned runs with two outs using a two-run single as part of a four-run frame.
The Griffins would get a run across and later load the bases, but a strikeout and a fly out to center would end any type of comeback.
Gwynedd-Mercy will have to catch their breath in a hurry, as they play tomorrow at Arcadia in a non-league twinbill starting at 2 p.m.
