BEL AIR, MD. – Gwynedd-Mercy downed Notre Dame (Md.) in a CSAC twinbill to pick up their first wins of the season. Game one was a 28-0 decision while the second ended 15-2.
Game one saw the Griffins (2-26, 2-14 CSAC) pound out a season-high 24 hits led by junior
Tegan Wendell (Glenside, Pa./Abington) who had five hits, three of which were doubles, and four RBIs. Freshmen
MaryKate Ballerino (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and
Chelsea Collazo (Bristol, Pa./Conwell-Egan) also knocked in four runs each and homered.
Ballerino and
Jennifer Whalen (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) scored five runs apiece.
GM scored six in the first and 13 in the second en route to the five-inning win.
Freshman
Kaitlyn Johnson (Milford, N.J./Delaware Valley) fanned three on just five hits and a walk.
In the second game, the big bat came from sophomore
Stephanie Farrar (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) who went 4-for-4 with four runs and four RBIs with a home run. Whalen was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. She also started on the mound, striking out eight while allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits.
Whalen and Wendell also swiped two bases apiece respectively.
Gwynedd-Mercy will play its final regular-season home game tomorrow when they take on Cedar Crest on Senior Day beginning at noon.
