BOX SCORE

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – Gwynedd-Mercy had their run through the NCAA Tournament come to an end as Christopher Newport knocked out the Griffins in an 8-2 defeat in a first-round game Wednesday afternoon.

The #7-ranked Captains scored twice early in the contest to put GM in a quick hole as Lindsay Hendricks scored two of her game-high five goals in the first 1:01 of the game.

Junior Caitlin Donohue (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) would cut the lead in half as she found paydirt off an assist from Maria Karidas (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock South). GM put together a string of corners before getting on the board at the 11:40 mark.

CNU was just too tough, netting two more goals before the end of the half, putting the Griffins in a 4-1 hole at the break.

Karidas would net a score of her own on a deflection with an assist from Donohue late in the contest, but the Griffins could not overcome their deficit.

Sophomore goalie Kelly Kruk (Phoenixville, Pa./Methacton) was kept busy, making 11 saves on 26 shots.

Gwynedd-Mercy finished with 10 shots and had nine penalty corners to the Captains' six.

The Griffins finish the 2012 season with a final record of 15-6 and a second-straight CSAC Championship.
