READING, PA. – Gwynedd-Mercy shot over 60% in the second half to notch their first win of the year in a 93-77 win at Penn State-Berks on Tuesday.
The Griffins were just 13-of-34 (38.2%) in the first and only led by four at the half. They responded in the second, going on a 16-for-26 (61.5%) shooting clip while hitting 11-of-12 from the line.
Frank Champion (Northfield, N.J/Mainland) was one of four Griffins in double digits as the senior poured in a game-high 20 points. Freshman
Darnell Artis (Philadelphia, Pa./LaSalle College H.S.) chipped in 19 points with four assists and three steals in his first start on the season.
Gwynedd (1-2) had their biggest lead in the first half after a bucket off a steal from freshman
Brian Hennessey (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) to make it a 15-point lead (31-16) at the 11:28 mark.
The Lions would climb back, getting to within two on a Dontez Reid three-pointer with 1:30 left in the stanza. Two free throws from senior
Brendan Stanton (Harleysville, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) with 42 ticks put the game at 46-42, where it stayed until halftime.
Stanton (18 points) would strike from downtown twice in the second, pushing the GM lead to double figures with just over six minutes in the game. His fast-break layup from an Artis assist on a steal with 2:01 left gave the Griffins an 85-73 lead.
For the game, Gwynedd connected on 10 three pointers and held an overwhelming 42-27 rebound edge. Freshmen
Larry Jones III (Woodbine, N.J./Holy Spirit) and
Tyler Barnes (New Egypt, N.J./New Egypt) each collected seven apiece.
Hennessey finished with 13 points. Darren Major led PSU-Berks (0-3) with 19 points off the bench.
The Griffins are off until next Thursday, November 29th as they welcome John Jay in the home opener at the Griffin Complex starting at 7 p.m.
