true Gwynedd-Mercy 3, Misericordia 1

BOX SCORE

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Two goals from sophomore Sarah Jackson (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) and one from sophomore Maria Karidas (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock South) in the second half was enough to help Gwynedd-Mercy to a 3-1 win over Misericordia in the team's season opener on Thursday.

Freshman goalie Kelly Kruk (Phoenixville, Pa./Methacton) anchored the defense, making nine saves on the day.

Both teams mustered up 14 shots in the first half, but Kruk and Cougar keeper Grace Riker kept it scoreless for the first 35 minutes as the duo made some spectacular stops.

Just over a minute into the second half, Karidas set up Jackson inside the arc to get the Griffins on the board.

Misericordia answered eight minutes later as Samantha Sorokas beat Kruk to knot it at 1-1.

Just over two minutes would go by as Jackson, Erin Gorenflo (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh), and Kelsey Deveney (Dalton, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) worked in penalty corner to help GM reclaim a one-goal lead.

In the 54th minute, Karidas made it 3-1 as she was able to get a stick on a pass from senior Casey Dellostretto (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland).

Gwynedd finished with 19 shots to the Cougar's 13 and compiled 10 penalty corners on the day.

Riker tallied eight stops for Misericordia.

The Griffins will take on the College of New Jersey on Saturday in Ewing, N.J. starting at 1 p.m.
