GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd-Mercy concluded the 2011 season by dropping two against visiting Immaculata in CSAC action on Senior Day. The Mighty Macs took game one, 2-0, and the second, 11-6.
Prior to the start of the second game, the team recognized its lone senior,
Heather Morgan (Audubon, N.J./Audubon) and her family.
In the first game, IU's Meagan Fitzgerald held the Griffin bats to just two hits, while fanning six in the decision. Scoreless through four innings, Immaculata used Julia Lamplugh's two-run triple in the fifth to account for the only runs.
Morgan suffered the loss, scattering two runs on nine hits with three K's and a walk.
She would get out of a bases loaded jam in the fourth, inducing a double play and a force out to keep the game scoreless.
The Griffins had a prime chance to get on the board in the sixth. After a hit and a walk, followed by a double steal to put runner on second and third with one out, Fitzgerald got a strikeout and an inning-ending groundout to kill the threat.
Junior
Ali Gurko (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) had one of the two GM hits. She also stole two bases. Freshman
Ashley Teagle (Philadelphia, Pa./Mastbaum) had the other hit.
In game two, IU broke open a scoreless contest in the third with nine runs on nine hits and two errors, but the Griffins tried to answer, plating six in the bottom of the frame.
Freshman
Maria Seserko (Philadelphia, Pa./Cardinal Dougherty) and
Stephanie Farrar (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) each had two hits, a run scored, and an RBI. Farrar added a triple for her fourth on the year.
Trailing by three runs, Gwynedd had a golden opportunity to pull closer after getting back-to-back singles from Seserko and Farrar to open the sixth. The Mighty Macs squashed the scoring chance getting a force out, pop foul and a strikeout to strand the runners.
IU tacked on two runs in the seventh on an Allison Zbrowski two-run single.
Morgan, who also added an RBI double, was tagged with the loss on the mound, finishing her record to 5-8 on the season.
The Griffins finish the season at 10-21 overall and 8-14 in league play.
