GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd-Mercy took game one, 4-1, but lost the second, 6-1, as the Griffins and Baptist Bible split a CSAC Doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon.
Game one saw sophomore
Maggie McSpadden (Spotswood, N.J./Spotswood) strike out a career-high 12 batters while allowing just one run on three hits. She also went 1-for-4 with a triple at the plate.
The Grififns (5-8, 3-1 CSAC) crossed two runs in the first. Sophomore
Tegan Wendell (Glenside, Pa./Abington) tripled, and later scored on a throwing error to second on a double steal. Freshman
Maria Seserko (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) added an RBI single for a 2-0 lead.
After Baptist Bible answered with a run in the second, junior
Nicole Paleologus (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) led off the bottom of the frame with a sharp single to right which got under the fielder's glove and went all the way to the fence. Paleologus beat the throw home to score on a two-base error to make it 3-1.
Freshman
Renee Stiteler (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) drove home Wendell in the third and it was all McSpadden needed as she recorded six of her 12 K's in the last four innings.
Game two saw the Defenders (9-5, 2-2 CSAC) break open a close 2-1 game with four runs in the seventh.
BBC pitcher Kacee Rava did it with her arm and her bat as she limited GM to just five hits and added a two-run homer in the decisive seventh.
The Griffins got their lone run in the fourth as Wendell scored from third again on a double steal.
Gwynedd threatened in the fifth after sophomore
Kelsey Craig (Boothwyn, Pa./Chichester) tripled and later a walk and hit by pitch loaded the bases. Wendell stepped to the plate and hit it right on the seams but it was corraled in center field for the third out.
Wendell also made a great defensive play at shortstop in the top of the frame with a runner on third and two outs, going deep into the hole to throw out the runner at first.
Gwynedd-Mercy plays at Marywood on Friday in a CSAC twinbill starting at 3 p.m.
