GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd-Mercy cemented the #1 playoff seed with its thrilling 3-2 victory over visiting Keystone on a very rainy Wednesday night.
Junior
Kelsey Deveney (Dalton, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) scored twice as the Griffins (12-3, 6-0 CSAC) posted their ninth win in a row, holding off the Giants (5-8, 2-4 CSAC) who were knocked out of the playoff chase.
Gwynedd, who outshot Keystone, 14-7 for the game, would build a 3-0 first-half lead, scoring twice early in the stanza. Freshman
Brittany Wilson (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) put GM on the board at the 8:42 mark followed by the first of two penalty corner goals from Deveney.
Late in the first half, Keystone looked to cut into the lead as a shot was deflected up high into the net, but it was waved off. Minutes later, the Giants did get it to 3-1 before the half as Lori-Ann Marino was able to deflect a long shot outside of the arc past GM keeper
Kelly Kruk (Phoenixville, Pa./Methacton).
Keystone rallied again early in the second as Marino would set up Katie Darling on a penalty corner in the 42nd minute to make it a one-goal game.
As the rain picked up in the second stanza, the teams' offenses had trouble generating scoring chances. Gwynedd was able to withstand a Giant penalty corner as time expired to seal the win.
Kruk finished with three saves while Keystone keeper Mary Grace Piazza made six.
Junior
Erin Gorenflo (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) added two assists on the night, both on the penalty corner tallies.
The Griffins will play at York College (Pa.) this Saturday in non-league action beginning at 1 p.m.
