GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Griffins honored their lone senior then went out and showed glimpses of the future in a 5-1 win over Widener Thursday afternoon to make it eight wins in a row.
A trio of underclassmen had their part in the offense. Sophomores
Maria Karidas (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock South) and
Sarah Jackson (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) led the charge with two scores apiece while freshman
Brooke Stretch (Havertown, Pa./Archbishop Prendergast) added a goal and an assist.
The team honored
Casey Dellostretto (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland) with a pre-game ceremony with her and her parents. Dellostretto added an assist in the win,
After the teams traded goals in the game's first 13 minutes, the Griffins (11-3) tacked on two quick tallies four minutes apart later in the stanza to lead 3-1 at the half.
Karidas and Jackson added second half goals to round out the scoring. Karidas also chipped in an assist.
Nicole Nardone scored the lone goal for the Pride (6-5).
Freshman keeper
Kelly Kruk (Phoenixville, Pa./Methacton) made nine stops on 13 shots. Widener goalie Maggie Karmeris recorded eight.
Dellostretto has started in over 70 games as a Griffin and was named all conference as a sophomore and a junior. She has helped the team to a 23-7 CSAC regular-season record along with three-straight playoff and two ECAC Tournament appearances. Off the field, she is a three-time (and soon to be four-time) national field hockey all-academic award winner with a current GPA of 3.41 as an Education major.
The Griffins will look to continue their winning ways when they host Keystone on Wednesday, October 19th. With a win, Gwynedd can lock up the top seed in the CSAC Playoffs which begin on November 2nd.
