GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- In a rematch of last year's CSAC finals Gwynedd-Mercy continued their home winning streak, defeating Cabrini, 5-1, to remain the last unbeaten team in conference play. Two goals each from
Maria Karidas (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock South
) and
Brooke Stretch (Havertown, Pa./Archbishop Prendergast
) paved the way for the Griffins' fourth-straight win.
The Griffins, who are 5-0 at home this season, were the first on the scoreboard with their lone first-half goal from Karidas, assisted by sophomore
Erin Magee (Lindenwold, N.J. / Paul VI).
The second half saw the Griffins coming out firing scoring the next three goals to give them a commanding 4-0 lead. Stretch helped stretch the lead by scoring two consecutive tallies five minutes apart to put Gwynedd-Mercy ahead with a comfortable lead.
The fourth goal of the day came from junior
Erin Gorenflo (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) with an assist from sophomore
Sarah Jackson (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.).
Jackson also assisted on Stretch's first goal of the second half. After a Cabrini goal by Karlie Gruccio in the 55th minute to break the shutout, Karidas put in the final goal unassisted in the 58th minute to account for the scoring
With the win the Griffins improve to 7-3, 3-0 in conference play. The Cavaliers fall to 4-4, 2-1.
Freshman goalie
Kelly Kruk (Phoenixville, Pa./Methacton) had nine saves, including a dramatic diving stop late in the first half. Cabrini keeper Genevieve Paulin recorded six saves on the day.
Cabrini was able to outshoot the Griffins, 16-15, but Gwynedd-Mercy held a 7-6 corners advantage.
The Griffins continue conference play Tuesday as they host Neumann University under the lights at 7 p.m.
