GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd-Mercy extended its win streak to five games as the Griffins held off Immaculata, 68-64, Thursday night at the Griffin Complex in Colonial States Athletic Conference action.
Despite an uncharacteristic 4-for-18 performance from behind the arc,
the Griffins (12-4, 7-2 CSAC) had some trouble in finding a shooting rhythm all night, but relied on their inside players, who responded in a big way.
Senior
Jon Hogga (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) led the Griffins with a team-high 18 points and nine rebounds and sophomore
Frank Champion (Northfield, NJ/Mainland) nearly netted a double-double in the second half alone with 11 points and nine rebounds over the final 20 minutes. He finished with 15 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks, and four steals. The two combined for eight of Gwynedd's 15 offensive rebounds and gave the Mighty Macs (6-10, 4-5 CSAC) fits all night.
Rob Siter scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Mighty Macs. Darnell Malabet and Nelson Torres both added 13 in the loss.
Gwynedd led 30-22 at the half and pushed the lead to 17 with 13:19 to go, but they never quite put the Mighty Macs away. A pair of free throws from Siter cut the Griffin lead to 58-54 with just under two minutes to go, but junior
Dan DelConte (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) answered with a three to push the lead back to seven points. After being held scoreless for the first 38 minutes, DelConte scored 7 points over the final two minutes, including another big three-pointer to help seal the win for the Griffins.
Senior
Jon Crabtree (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) scored 11 of his 13 points in the first half and sophomore
Doug Berzins (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) also finished in double figures with 11 points.
Crabtree and Hogga were one rebound shy each of recording their own double-double.
The Griffins will look to continue their recent hot streak Saturday when they travel to Baptist Bible for a CSAC matchup beginning at 3 p.m.
