Doug Smith joined the Gwynedd Mercy University Head Men’s and Women’s Track and Field coaching staff as an assistant prior to the 2024-2025 season. A Philadelphia-area high school track and field coach since 2000, Coach Smith has extensive experience training student-athletes to Philadelphia Catholic League, District, and State Championships, including Steve Slaton (Conwell Egan Catholic High School, 2001-2005) and Drew Magaha (Upper Moreland High School, 2008-2012). The former went on to star at running back for West Virginia University (2005-2007) and was drafted in 2008 by National Football League (NFL) affiliate, Houston Texans.
Outside of track and field, Coach Smith is a high school Spanish teacher for over 20 years. He spent 22 years at Bucks County Technical High School (2000-2022) and more recently, has taught at Upper Moreland High School (2022-present).
Originally from western Pennsylvania, Coach Smith is a 1996 graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish. He currently resides in Upper Dublin, Pennsylvania with his wife, Michele and three sons; Andrew, Nicholas, and Owen.
