A former Griffin captain and 2011 All-Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC, Honorable Mention) goalkeeper, Mike Leonard ’12 joined Coach Bontempo’s staff as an assistant prior to the 2013 season. Coach Leonard oversees the team’s physical conditioning and the development of the Gwynedd Mercy University goalkeeping talent.

As a student-athlete, Leonard was an exemplary Griffin as he garnered a 2011 Philadelphia-Area Sports Information Directors Association (PhillySIDA)/Philadelphia Inquirer Men’s Soccer Academic All-Area honor while leading Gwynedd Mercy University to CSAC Semifinals in 2009 and 2011. A memorable playoff appearance in 2011 saw Leonard make the only two saves needed in a 3-0 quarterfinal victory over Cabrini College (University) (Nov. 1) and eight saves in a dramatic 1-0 double overtime, semifinal loss to #20 and eventual CSAC Champion, Neumann College (University). Leonard also served as Gwynedd Mercy University’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) President.

Leonard ranks first all-time at Gwynedd Mercy University in wins (19), losses (35), saves (476), goalkeeper games played (63), goalkeeper games started (57), and minutes played (5,346:54). He also ranks third all-time in saves-per-game (7.56) and ties (3), fifth in save percentage (.793), and sixth in goals-against-average (GAA) (2.09). Leonard is also the program’s single-season leader in saves (176 in 2009), goalkeeper games played (21 in 2011), goalkeeper games started (21 in 2011), minutes played (1,877:35 in 2011), losses (14 in 2011), and ties (3 in 2009).

In addition to coaching at his alma mater, Leonard is currently employed as the senior leader for wellness and membership for the Greater Philadelphia Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA).
