Alex Calder was appointed as Gwynedd Mercy University's Head Field Hockey Coach in July 2020. Prior to becoming a Griffin, Calder was a three-year assistant coach at St. Lawrence University (2017-2019) and a volunteer assistant coach at her alma mater, Gettysburg College (2016). In addition to her coaching duties, Calder serves as Gwynedd Mercy University's Federal Work Study Coordinator.
In Coach Calder's first full season of competition, Gwynedd Mercy University's late-season surge saw the Griffins claim regular-season wins over Arcadia University (W, 2-1 on Oct. 6), Immaculata University (W, 1-0 on Oct. 9), Marywood University (W, 3-2 on Oct. 12), Neumann University (W, 2-0 on Oct. 20), and an Atlantic East Conference (AEC) Field Hockey Championship Tournament victory over the sixth-seeded Knights (W, 2-0 on Oct. 30). Despite a 2-0 semifinal loss to the eventual league-champion, #2 Cabrini University (Nov. 3), the Griffins finished the 2021 season with a 6-14 overall mark and a 3-2 league standing.
Calder graduated magna cum laude from Gettysburg College in 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts in English with a secondary education certification and a minor in history. There, she was a four-year midfielder for the Bullets and served as a team captain in her senior season. Additionally, her academic accomplishments include a National Field Hockey Coaches Association's (NFHCA) Scholar of Distinction title and a pair of academic honor societies; Kappa Delta Pi (Education) and Phi Alpha Theta (History). She was also a member of the Bullets' Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and worked in the College's athletics communications office.
