Center Valley, Pa. – (9/1/2026) – Gwynedd Mercy University (0-1) opened its 2026 men's soccer season on the road Monday evening, battling DeSales University (1-0) in a 3-0 setback at the Bulldogs' Soccer Field.
Griffin Highlights:
- DeSales struck early, scoring just 3:06 into the contest (1-0). Gwynedd Mercy responded quickly and created two of its best opportunities of the evening through sophomore midfielder McCarthy Gomes (Feasterville-Trevose, Pa.). The Griffin midfielder put a shot on target in the sixth minute that was stopped by DeSales goalkeeper before testing him again at 11:33 with another attempt toward the bottom-left corner.
- While the Bulldogs applied pressure throughout the opening half, Gwynedd Mercy junior goalkeeper Cody Sell (Souderton, Pa.) helped keep the Griffins within striking distance. Sell made consecutive saves in the 17th and 18th minutes before adding stops later in the period.
- DeSales eventually added its second goal at 27:34, sending Gwynedd Mercy into halftime facing a 2-0 deficit.
- The Griffins' defense settled in after the break and limited the Bulldogs to just four second-half shots after DeSales recorded 15 in the opening period. Gwynedd Mercy also earned its first corner kick of the match in the 55th minute as the Griffins looked for an opportunity to cut into the deficit.
- Gomes led Gwynedd Mercy offensively with two shots, both on goal, while freshman midfielder Jordan Gross accounted for the Griffins' other attempt. Sell finished the contest with four saves in 70:31 of action (0-1). The Griffins also utilized their depth in the season opener, with 15 substitutes seeing time as Gwynedd Mercy began working its 2026 roster into match action.
Gwynedd Mercy is back in action at home for their home opener on Friday, September 4, when the team battles Keystone College with a scheduled 3:00 p.m. kickoff.
