Griffins Play Colonels Tight in Road Affair

Wilkes-Barre, Pa. – (2/26/26) – Gwynedd Mercy University (0-2) continued their young season on the road as they traveled to visit Wilkes University (2-0) Thursday evening after schedule switches delayed their meeting. Despite the balanced team effort across the field, the Griffins were unable to get the win and dropped the contest 10-6. The Red and Gold matched the Colonels shot-for-shot, finishing with 23 total shots, with a 10-9 edge in shots on goal. Junior midfielder Rebecca Gordon (Sicklerville, N.J.) provided a four-goal, one-assist performance, participating in five of the Griffins' six tallies. Sophomore midfielder Elena Colliluori (Gilbertsville, Pa.) added two goals while senior midfielder Kira Bradley (Langhorne, Pa.) provided two assists to round out the scoring participants.

Griffin Highlights

  • Gwynedd Mercy University had the first strike just 41 seconds into the contest with Gordon finding the back of the net unassisted off the opening draw. Gordon's contributions also included two caused turnovers and two draw controls.
  • As the Griffins and Colonels traded goals through the opening half, a second-quarter goal from Colliluori off a feed from Bradley knotted the contest at 3-3 (9:43) to keep the contest close.
  • Back-to-back goals from Gordon (4-6, 5:37; 5-7, 1:54) in the third quarter pushed the Red and Gold into striking distance as the contest headed into the final frame of the evening.
  • Key turnovers and ground balls from freshman midfielder Samantha Whelan (Birdsboro, Pa.) and senior defense Ayana Lyons (Norristown, Pa.) limited the transition opportunities for Wilkes University
  • Senior goalie Victoria Sloan (Philadelphia, Pa.) (0-2) recorded five saves on nine shots on goal through the contest to round off the complete-game effort.

Gwynedd Mercy University continues their season on the road with a visit to Arcadia University on February 28, for a 12:00 p.m. start time.
