Griffins Tackle Saints to End Regular Season Play

Arlington, Va., - (4/23/2025) -  Gwynedd Mercy University (4-13, 2-3 AEC) wrapped up regular-season play with a trip to Marymount University (15-2, 5-0 AEC) this afternoon, losing to the Saints 2-23. After a 0-10 quarter the Griffins defense was able to apply more pressure in the second quarter.  Deshe Dunlap (Philadelphia, Pa.) was able to snag a key ground ball to swing the Griffins' momentum and get them back to their attacking side.  Usually an attacker, Allyssa Seifert (Philadelphia, Pa.) made her debut as a midfielder in the second quarter.  After a strong Griffins stop, Seifert was able to use her speed to her advantage and notched a goal (02:53 Q2).  Just over a minute later the Griffins utilized a man-up opportunity, with Hailey Bloom (Margate City, N.J.) scoring off a pass from Rebecca Gordon (Sicklerville, N.J.) (01:33 Q2).  The Saints came out on fire in the second half, though, and the Griffins were unable to score through the rest of the game.

Griffin Highlights:

  • Cheyenne Avellino (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J.) contributed to all three Griffins caused turnovers in today's loss.

  • The Griffins kept pace with the Saints in the first quarter of play, shooting eight times as compared to the Saints' 10 shots.  As the Saints were able to keep possession throughout the game, the Griffins spent less time in their attacking unit, with only four total shots in the final three quarters.

  • Marymount dominated the draw control, winning 22 of 28 controls on the day.

The Griffins secured a bid in the Atlantic East Conference Championships and are set to play Marymount again on Saturday, April 26 in Arlington again; game time to be determined.
