Griffins Welcome Nittany Lions For Rare Non-Conference Rematch

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (4/23/2025) - Gwynedd Mercy University (11-21) welcomed back Penn State Abington (16-16) for a rare non-conference rematch to conclude the Red and Gold's non-conference schedule. These two teams met earlier in the season (Feb. 28) with the Griffins securing a 9-6 victory. The rematch had a similar high intensity feel as both teams jousted back and forth all game, but in the end, it was Gwynedd Mercy who once again secured a 6-3 victory. Freshman pitcher Connor Hafto (Washington Township, N.J.) started on the mound for the Red and Gold, lasting 3.2 innings, allowing three hits, two runs, one walk, and striking out two. Freshman pitcher Dylan Ganey (Langhorne, Pa.) pitched a very high-leverage sixth and seventh innings, allowing three hits, one earned run, and striking out one, picking up his first victory in his collegiate career (1-1).

Griffin Highlights:

  • The Griffins did not have much offense going for them until the fourth inning, when junior infielder A.J. Johnson (Lavallette, N.J.) hit a booming triple to right center and scored a few pitches later thanks to a wild pitch (2-1).
  • In the sixth inning, Gwynedd Mercy brought home two more runs to take their first lead in the contest with a run-batted-in (RBI) fielder's choice from freshman catcher Gabe Tomei (Manahwakin, N.J.) (2-2) and an RBI single from sophomore shortstop Drew Haines (Hammonton, N.J.) (3-2).
  • Similar to the sixth, the seventh inning also saw the home team bring across two runs. Junior infielder Jimmy DeCarlo (Ridley Park, Pa.) took one for the team in a bases-loaded situation and was hit by a pitch, earning an RBI and doubling the team's lead (4-2). Senior infielder Ricky Templeton (West Deptford, N.J.) hit into a double play, but not before scoring sophomore infielder Ryan Horner (Cinnaminson, N.J.) (5-2).
  • The final run for Gwynedd Mercy came in the bottom of the eighth with a Horner RBI single to right field. (6-3).
  • Sophomore pitcher Michael Inglisa (Delran, N.J.) recorded a six-out save while walking two and striking out two.

Gwynedd Mercy University returns to Atlantic East Conference action Friday, April 25, when the team travels to Immaculata University for a 3:00 p.m. first pitch.
