Griffins Play First Game In 2025 RussMatt Central Florida Invitational

Auburndale, Fl. - (3/7/2025) - Gwynedd Mercy University (4-4) traveled down to the Sunshine State to Auburndale, Florida, to participate in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational for their 2025 spring trip. The Red and Gold's first matchup was Fitchburg State College (1-1). Like the weather, the Griffins offense heated up against the Falcons, scoring eight runs in the contest and securing an 8-3 victory. Freshman catcher Gabe Tomei (Manahawkin, N.J.) had himself a day at the dish, going 4-for-2 with three runs-batted-in (RBI), including his second homerun of the season in the seventh with a two RBI homer to right field in the seventh inning.  

Griffin Highlights: 

  • After a scoreless first two innings, senior outfielder Sam Junker (Ambler, Pa.) brought home the first run in the contest with an RBI single through the left side of the diamond, scoring junior outfielder Chris Nodeland (Hamilton, N.J.) (1-0). 
  • In the third inning, Tomei recorded his first RBI of the day with a single scoring senior pitcher/outfielder Cooper Root (Runnemede, N.J.) (2-0), but a fielding error from the first baseman also brought home senior infielder Ricky Hamilton (West Deptford, N.J.) (3-0). 
  • The eighth inning provided the final two runs for the Red and Gold, including an RBI sacrifice fly from junior infielder Jimmy DeCarlo (Ridley, Park, Pa.) (7-3) and a Root single to centerfield bringing home Junker (8-3). 
  • Freshman pitcher Brayden Scott (Gilbert, Ariz.) got the start against Fitchburg State and went 6.1 innings allowing three runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out three.  

Gwynedd Mercy University continues their play down in Florida, taking on Lakeland University next on Saturday, March ,8 with a 12:30 p.m. start time.
