Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (9/1/2023) - Gwynedd Mercy University (0-1) welcomed Misericordia University (1-0) for today's season and home opener. The Griffins took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break thanks to a second-quarter goal from sophomore Mackenzie Reed (Philadelphia, Pa.) (1-0, 22:11). Unfortunately, the Cougars stole the momentum and the game with a pair of goals in the third quarter, 2-1.

Griffin Highlights

• Gwynedd Mercy University controlled the contest early and out-shot Misericordia University 5-3 in the first quarter.
• Freshman goalkeeper Nikki Williams (Cinnaminson, N.J.) made seven of her 10 saves in the second quarter, preserving the Griffin lead to halftime after Reed scored the fourth goal of her collegiate career.
• The Gwynedd Mercy defense helped Williams by fending off 15 Misericordia University penalty corners.
• Like Reed, freshman midfielder Hailey Crosby (Afton, N.Y.) offered a pair of shots, but junior forward Ashley Berry (Philadelphia, Pa.) came off the bench to lead the Griffins in shots with three. 
• Junior forward Cheyenne Avellino (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) and freshman midfielder Lillie Uttenriether (Bel Air, Md.) also took a shot apiece.

Gwynedd Mercy University continues a busy early-season schedule tomorrow, Saturday, September 2, with a 2:00 p.m. contest at Montclair State University.
