Immaculata, Pa. (4/2/2023) - Working around Saturday showers, Gwynedd Mercy University (11-10, 1-5) and Immaculata University (12-7, 3-0) opened their Atlantic East Conference (AEC) series with a Friday doubleheader and concluded it with a Sunday single. The defending league champion Mighty Macs took all three contests from the Griffins, sweeping the twin bill 10-5 and 9-1 in seven innings, before outlasting a Gwynedd Mercy University rally in a 3-2 finale. Sam Junker (Ambler, Pa.) stayed hot with a 6-for-11 (.545) three-game set, while juniors
Frank Ebling (Cherry Hill, N.J.) (L, 5.1 IP, 4H, 3R, 7BB, 2K) and
Mitchell Bramsway (Temecula, Calif.) (2.2 IP, BB, 2K) combined for a strong day on the hill in the final affair.
Griffin Highlights
Game 1
- Gwynedd Mercy University needed to rally from a 10-0 deficit after the fifth inning and scored five in the seventh thanks to a bases-loaded error at short, a run-scoring single from Junker, and a two-out, two-run double from graduate Billy Collins (Hatfield, Pa.). Unfortunately, the final out of the contest came just one batter later.
- Junker was 3-for-4 with a run-batted-in (RBI). Collins was 1-for-4 with two RBI.
- Freshman Ryan Kasper (Levittown, Pa.) (2.2 IP, 1H, 0ER, BB, K) and junior Joe Golden (Churchville, Pa.) (1.0 IP, BB) combined for 3.2 innings of solid relief.
Game 2
- Collins cut an early 3-0 Mighty Mac lead to 3-1 with a first-inning sacrifice fly from senior second baseman Jake Martell (Levittown, Pa.).
- Junker was 2-for-4 with singles in the first and third innings.
- Sophomore Anthony Barbosa (Norristown, Pa.) retire the final six outs without surrendering a run. He allowed a hit and walked to while striking out one.
Game 3
- Immaculata University scored two runs in the second inning and another in the third. Gwynedd Mercy University chipped away with fifth-inning run and a sixth-inning RBI single from Martell, but complete the comeback in a one-run conclusion.
- Martell was 2-for-3 with two walks and an RBI. Junker was 1-for-3 and graduate Rob Bailey (Abington, Pa.) was 2-for-4 with a run.
- Ebling took the loss (2-2) despite holding the Mighty Macs to three runs on four hits and seven walks. He struck out two.
- Bramsway walked his only base runner over the final 2.2 innings. He struck out two Mighty Macs as well.
Gwynedd Mercy University breaks from league play to visit Rowan University for a 3:30 p.m. contest on Tuesday, April 6.
