Runs Galore, Griffins Score 26 in Win Over Aggies

Doylestown, Pa. - (4/18/2023) - After sitting behind a 1-0 deficit for two innings, Gwynedd Mercy University (14-15) got to work. Eight Griffins scored in the top of the third inning (8-1), another scored in the fourth (9-1), and five more in the fifth (13-1), before Delaware Valley University (13-17) put another tally on the scoreboard. The Aggies cut into the lead with three runs in the bottom of fifth (13-4) and doubled Gwynedd Mercy University run total in the seventh (16-10), but a 10-run eighth retired Delaware Valley University on a 26-10 final. Five Griffins recorded multiple hit performances; sophomore left fielder Cooper Root (Runnemede, N.J.) drove in six runs with his three hits (3-for-5), while graduate shortstop Rob Bailey (Abington, Pa.) knocked in five runs with his three hits (3-for-5). Freshman Tommy Angelucci (Mount Laurel, N.J.) collected his second win (2-1) in the bullpen game; he allowed one run on one hit and four walks, while striking out one.

  • Gwynedd Mercy University's eight-run third inning started with a leadoff walk to freshman right Sam Junker (Ambler, Pa.) and it included RBI-hits from senior Nick Price (Levittown, Pa.), Bailey (2), senior second baseman Jake Martell (Levittown, Pa.), Root (3), and junior first baseman Frank Ebling (Cherry Hill, N.J.).
  • Root added his four run-batted-in (RBI) in the fourth inning.
  • In the fifth, freshman center fielder Chris Nodeland (Hamilton, N.J.), Martell, and Root knocked if runs and the three-run seventh included a RBI-double from Junker. 
  • In the 10-run eighth, Price triggered a two-out avalanche with a two-run single to left. It was followed by run-scoring base hits from senior third baseman Noah Andress (Levittown, Pa.), Bailey, and graduate center fielder Jack Jamison (Fort Washington, Pa.).
  • Martell was 2-for-4 with four walks, three runs, and three RBI. Root was 3-for-5 with two walks, two runs, and six RBI. Junker was 3-for-5 with a walk and two RBI. Price was 3-for-6 with a walk, three runs, and three RBI. Bailey was 3-for-5 with a walk, five runs, and five RBI.
Gwynedd Mercy University resumes their AEC schedule on Friday, April 21, with a 3:00 p.m. contest at Centenary University (NJ).
