Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - (4/1/2022) - Gwynedd Mercy University (1-17) hosted Widener University (14-6) for a pair of chilly, windy games this afternoon. The Pride took an early 4-2 lead and outscored the Griffins in a busy fifth inning to lead 7-4 headed to the sixth inning of today's opener. A run-batted-in (RBI) single from freshman shortstop/left fielder Shylynn Cordero (Allentown, Pa.) in the sixth inning cut the final deficit to two runs, 7-5. In game two, sophomore pitcher Jocelyn Baumeister (Willow Grove, Pa.) staked herself a 3-0 lead with a first-inning single and a third-inning ball to the Pride shortstop, only for Widener University to rally for a 6-5 lead in the sixth inning and an eventual 8-6 victory.

Cordero (2-for-3, BB, R, RBI), sophomore pitcher/third baseman Ashley Focht (Harrisburg, Pa.) (2-for-3, BB, RBI), and junior first baseman Allison Ross (Philadelphia, Pa.) (2-for-3, RBI) recorded two hits apiece in the opener. Focht (0-7) took the loss despite only allowing one earned run on five hits and two walks. She struck out four in four innings. In game two, Focht (4-for-5) and Cordero (3-for-4) combined to got 7-for-9 and a pair of runs at the top of the Griffin lineup. Baumeister (2-for-4, R, RBI), sophomore third baseman/pitcher Grace Scally (Philadelphia, Pa.) (1-for-3, BB, 2 RBI), and fifth-year left fielder Emily Shaheen (Pottstown, Pa.) (0-1, RBI) knocked in the Gwynedd Mercy University runs.

Gwynedd Mercy University returns to their Atlantic East Conference (AEC) schedule tomorrow, Saturday, April 2, when they host Marymount University for a 12:00 p.m. twin bill.
