Aston, Pa. - (3/21/2022) - Gwynedd Mercy University (1-9, 1-1) opened their Atlantic East Conference (AEC) schedule with today's split at Neumann University (5-10, 1-1). The Griffins won game one by an 5-2 margin with run-scoring hits from junior center fielder
Emma Carney (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.), junior pinch hitter
Allison Ross (Philadelphia, Pa.), and sophomore third baseman
Grace Scally (Philadelphia, Pa.), but lost the second in just five innings; 9-1, after scoring a run in their first at-bat. The Knights used a five-run second inning, a three-run fourth inning, and a fifth-inning score to end the nightcap early.
Sophomore
Jocelyn Baumeister (Willow Grove, Pa.) retired the last nine Knights in order and struck out five in all to earn her first win (1-3) of the season. She allowed two runs on four hits and three walks. Baumeister also knocked in the Griffins' first run of the opener, knocking in Carney with a single to center field. Sophomore shortstop
Ashley Focht (Harrisburg, Pa.) plated Gwynedd Mercy University's second run with her third-inning single to right center. Unfortunately, Neumann University echoed the Griffin run with scores of their own in the second and fourth innings; 2-2. Carney's fifth-inning single up the middle gave the Griffins the edge, 3-2, a sixth-inning Ross single to center field added insurance, 4-2, and a seventh-inning Scally double to center field ensured the Gwynedd Mercy University's first win of the season.
Carney singled to short to score sophomore shortstop
Shylynn Cordero (Allentown, Pa.) in the Griffins' first at-bat of game two. Regrettably, the rest did not go as well. Neumann University took a commanding 5-1 lead after their second-inning at-bat. They added to their lead with three runs in the fourth inning, 8-1, and a clincher fifth inning; 9-1. Cordero was 3-for-3 with first-inning single to left field, a third-inning single to short, and a fifth-inning single up the middle. Baumeister was 2-for-2, recording singles in the first and fourth innings.
Gwynedd Mercy University breaks from their AEC schedule tomorrow, Tuesday, March 22, to host Ursinus College for their home-opener. The doubleheader is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. first pitch.
