Radnor, Pa. - (1/17/2022) - Mired behind a 18.7% (14-of-75) shooting performance and a 72-37 rebound deficit, Gwynedd Mercy University (9-8, 3-1) suffered their first Atlantic East Conference (AEC) loss in tonight's 72-47 final at Cabrini University (5-9, 1-2). Sophomore guard
Ava Casale (Sewell, N.J.) led the Griffins with 13 points, four rebounds, and a steal. Junior forward
Haley Crossley (Warminster, Pa.) and sophomore guard
Lynzie Eggers (Turnersville, N.J.) both finished the affair with nine points and five rebounds.
Gwynedd Mercy University gradually lost ground in the opening frame as Cabrini University's lead first reached double digits, 17-6, with 3:20 left to play and rested at dozen (12) points for the quarter break, 21-9 (1:06). But the Griffins reduced the difference to just four points in the later minutes of the second frame thanks to a Crossley inspired run; the reigning AEC Player of the Week hit a layup (5:19), a free throw (4:00), and a three pointer (0:37) in an 8-1 run that left the Griffins down 24-20 with 37 seconds remaining. Unfortunately, a last-second Cavalier layup left the halftime spread at six points; 26-20 (0:01). After intermission, Gwynedd Mercy University was unable to recover as Cabrini University quickly reestablished a double figure advantage, 33-23 (8:40), before pacing the Griffins to a 49-32 (0:01) third-quarter margin and an eventual 72-47 (0:34) final.
Gwynedd Mercy University resumes their AEC schedule on Wednesday, January 19, when they host Marymout University for a 6:00 p.m. contest.
