GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. --
Michael Nelms was named head coach of the Gwynedd Mercy University Women's Soccer Team effective June 2021.
The longtime assistant for the GMercyU Men's Team Nelms will take the reins for the Griffin Women's Program.
Nelms graduated from and played soccer at Holy Family University and also has a master's degree in Education from Temple University. Michael served as an assistant coach at Holy Family University and helped lead them to appearances in the NCAA Tournament. He also had the opportunity to coach with Gwynedd Mercy Men's Head Coach
Dave Bontempo at Father Judge High School. He went on to become to coach at Upper Dublin High School and later Rancocas Valley H.S.
Mike has coached at Council Rock Soccer Club and his Council Rock Gunners Elite team were finalists in the State Cup in 2014.

Keith Mondillo quoted on the new hire: "Since arriving on campus six years ago as the men's assistant soccer coach, Mike Nelms established himself as a valuable member of the coaching staff and athletic department. His enthusiasm and work ethic will take the women's soccer program to the next level and his recruiting ties to the area will undoubtedly jump start the program in the next year."
He is a master level science teacher at Sandy Run Middle School for the past 17 plus years. Raising a family, coaching and teaching are his passions in life. He brings decades of experience, energy, and commitment for excellence to the program. Michael preaches that the greatest accomplishments from the game of soccer are not wins and losses but the relationships developed throughout the years with other coaches, former players, and referees.
The Griffins start their 2021 season on Wednesday, September 1st at home against Goucher College.
