RADNOR, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy had their 2021 season come to a close as the Griffins suffered two tough defeats in the Atlantic East Conference Tournament Pod at Cabrini. GMercyU fell to the host Cavaliers on a walk-off home run in a 5-3 decision. Needing a win to stay alive, the Griffins saw Marywood score three runs in the top of the seventh to go on and take a 3-2 win.
First game
Emma Carney got things rolling in the first inning as she hit a two-run homerun. Cabrini's Casey Scheuren answered with a two-run shot of her own in the second. A pair of errors in the third led to an unearned run to put the Cavs up 3-2.
In the fourth with runners at second and third, an RBI groundout from
Chelsea Briggs to plate
Madison Condurso put the teams deadlocked at 3-3.
Gwynedd worked to get two on in the fifth and a runner in scoring position in the sixth, but could not grab the lead.
Not to be outdone, starter
Maddy McBride worked out of a jam in the bottom of the fifth. With two on, McBride got back-to-back forceouts to keep the home team off the board.
In the seventh, Emily Wargo ended it with a two-run homer to left.
Carney was officially 1-for-3 with a run scored and a walk while
Ashley Focht added two hits.
Second game
Soon after the walkoff outcome, Gwynedd looked to regroup and stay alive when they took on the Pacers. Again, they started off hot, scoring twice in their first at bat. RBI singles from Focht and
Grace Scally made it 2-0.
Focht limited Marywood to just four hits through six innings as the team tried to get some breathing room. Mara Hamm kept Marywood close, yielding six hits with two walks and six K's.
After the first two batters reached in the seventh, Focht was lifted for reliever
Ashley Haggerty. After a run had crossed for Marywood, the Pacers had the bases loaded with one out. The throw home after a grounder to second was off the mark, allowing an unearned run to tie it up. Later an RBI groundout gave Marywood the lead.
Gwynedd looked to rally in the seventh, getting runners on first and second with one out, but Hamm got a strikeout and grounder to end the Griffin's season.
The losses also mark the end of the careers of the team's four seniors: Briggs,
Kaylee Craig,
Brianna Polly, and
Emily Shaheen. The four are the last members of the team that won the regular-season and hosted the conference tournament from 2018.
