IMMACULATA, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy closed out their abbreviated 2020-21 season with an 80-73 win at Immaculata Friday night.
For the second night in a row, the Griffins'
Haley Crossley and
Elise Sylvester helped lead the charge. Crossley recorded a double-double, notching a team-high 13 points and adding 11 rebounds. Sylvester kicked in 11 points, seven boards, and six assists as the team held off a late IU push.
Sylvester's three-pointer midway in the first gave GMercyU a 10-6 edge and the lead would slowly grow from there. She would strike again from downtown early in the second for an 11-point lead. After building a lead as much as 16 points,
Shannon Carroll hit a key three in the final possession of the half to give Gwynedd a 43-30 advantage at halftime.
But the Griffins would record six of their 13 turnovers in the third quarter. Immaculata used those to net nine points in the frame. They would close out the quarter on a 6-0 run to get within 63-56 heading into the fourth.
Gwynedd, who held a single-digit lead in that final quarter, saw IU get within four with 39 seconds to play (77-73). After a timeout, Crossley scored her final points of the evening in the ensuing possession to help cement the final score.
Carroll tied Crossley with 11 rebounds on the night for the team lead. As a unit, the Griffins were 14-of-32 (43.8%) from behind the arc with three apiece from
Kelly Owens and rookie
Gabby Marinacci. Each finished with nine points.
For Immaculata, Theresa Kearney led all scorers, scoring 21 of her game-high 35 points in the second half.
The game also marked the end for the team's four seniors (Carroll,
Jill Kane,
Sydney Thompson, and
Dylan Johnson) who were honored the night prior at home.
