Moravian Takes Two From Griffins In Home Opener

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy played their home opener on Wednesday but were taken down in a pair of games by visiting Moravian. The nationally ranked Greyhounds won the first game, 10-2, and the nightcap, 11-1.

Game One
Brianna Polly and Jocelyn Baumeister each collected a pair of hits as the Griffins played in a 1-1 game until Moravian plated four runs in the fifth and later a five-spot in the seventh to open up a lead.

Baumeister's two-out infield single in the first inning plated Polly for an early 1-0 edge. The Greyhounds countered in the second on an RBI single from Briana DiCandeloro.

After a leadoff walk and infield single to start the top of the fifth, Moravian's Cameron Cassidy knocked both runners in with a triple to right as part of that four-run frame.

Polly doubled home Emily Shaheen with two outs in the bottom half to cut into the deficit. The Greyhounds used five hits and two Griffin errors to help score five runs in the seventh.

Cassidy, DiCandeloro, and Maddisen Bieber each had two hits for the visitors in game one.

Starter Ashley Focht threw into the fifth but was charged with five earned runs on five hits and two walks.

Game Two
Baumeister had two of the team's four hits in the second game as the Griffins saw Moravian score in each of their at-bats. Shannon Brogan hit a two-run single in the first to help get the guests out to a 3-0 lead.

Polly put GMercyU on the board in the fourth as she walked with the bases loaded after working an eight-pitch at bat.

Bieber and teammate Shannon Brogan each drove in three runs while Brooke Wehr hit a two-run home run in the seventh.

Ashley Haggerty shouldered the decision, going into the third inning.

The Griffins resume action next Friday, March 26th, when they open Atlantic East play hosting Cabrini in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
