Griffins Even Up With Win Over Manhattanville College

Purchase, N.Y. - (12/11/2021) - An active Lynzie Eggers (Turnersville, N.J.) gave Gwynedd Mercy University (5-5) the early energy it needed to pace Mahattanville College (9-2) to a 22-19 first-quarter spread and a 40-35 halftime score, before separating for an 80-67 victory on the strength of a 29-15 third-quarter edge. In the end, the Griffins held a 49-37 rebounding advantage while holding the home team to a 28.7% (25-of-87) shooting performance. Eggers finished with her first career double-double - 18 points, 11 rebounds - but she was only one of three Griffins to record a double-double as junior forward Haley Crossley (Warminster, Pa.) totaled 15 points and 11 rebounds, while junior forward Cayla Sharkey (Lansdale, Pa.) recorded 11 points and 11 rebounds. Senior guard Elise Sylvester (Pottstown, Pa.) chimed in with 14 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and three steals.

Gwynedd Mercy University took the lead in the back half of the first quarter with a Sharkey three pointer (12-9, 6:08) and a Eggers and-one (15-9, 5:41) sparking the Griffins for a 13-10 closing run. In the second quarter the Griffin lead grew to as many as 11 points, 38-27 (2:52), before a Valiant rally closed the halftime margin to just five points, 40-35 (0:33). Gwynedd Mercy University's third-quarter came late with some long-range success and plenty of second-chance baskets extending the gap to 19 points, 69-50 (0:21). In the fourth quarter, an early Sylvester jumper maxed the Griffin advantage at 21 points, 73-52 (8:19), prior to a 15-7 Valiant close.

Gwynedd Mercy University returns to the Griffin Complex next Saturday, December 18, when they host Wilkes University for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off.
