NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The Gwynedd Mercy Softball Team opened its 2020 season on Monday at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic, but were on the wrong end of two losses on the day.
In the first game, the Griffins fell to King's, 9-4. The day's second game saw Wilkes with a 6-5 decision.
Against King's,
Emma Carney had two hits and
Lauren Waller added a three-run home run.
Gwynedd trailed 3-0 until the fourth when Waller hit her eighth career homer to tie things up. The Monarchs took a 5-4 lead into the sixth, and took advantage of a two-out error to help plate four runs in the frame.
Alexis Gartner suffered the loss in the circle, as six of the runs allowed were earned.
In the nightcap vs. Wilkes, GMercyU tried to come all the way back from an early 6-0 hole, but ran out of innings in the decision.
Carney kept the hot bat going, going 3-for-4 with three RBI's. Her two-run single in the seventh was part of a three-run burst to get within one.
Brianna Polly added three hits and a run scored while
Amanda Clark doubled twice and scored twice.
Madison Hausman took the loss as the starter pitched into the third.
Katelyn Barker came on in relief and allowed no runs on just four hits in 3.2 innings of work.
The Griffins are back at it tomorrow with a pair of games. First up is Hilbert College at 11:30 a.m. followed by a date with Eastern Mennonite at 1:30 p.m.
