GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy seized a late lead and was able to hold off Goucher, 12-10, Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.
Samantha Brown scored her third goal of the game with 11 minutes to play to give the Griffins their first lead of the game at 10-9.
Victoria Braeunle and
Anna Bernicker added some insurance goals to help cement the outcome.
Braeunle and
Victoria Mollitor also netted three goals for GMercyU who also got 10 big saves from freshman goalie
Reilly Owens. Bernicker totaled two tallies with
Jessica Ziegler adding one. The Griffins defense held Goucher without a goal for a 17-minute stretch in the second half.
Braeunle also notched a personal milestone, as her second goal of the day, at the 3:08 mark of the first half gave her 200 career points. The junior becomes the fourth player in program history to eclipse the mark.
For the Gophers, Julia Gazzola registered four points on three goals and an assist. Teamamte Shannon Stull also tallied three.
In the first half, the Griffins fell behind by as many as three goals but rallied to tie the score. A three-goal burst at the end of the period including a tally from Ziegler crashing through the crease with eight seconds left, knotted the teams at 8-8 at the break.
Gwynedd would trail 9-7 in the second before they put together four straight over six-minute span including the eventual go-ahead score from Brown.
Abbie McHerron and Belle Christ combined for eight saves for Goucher.
The team heads to Hilton Head, South Carolina for two games next week on their spring break trip. On Tuesday, they take on Ohio Northern on Tuesday before a Thursday date with Drew.
