GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy suffered a tough 1-0 overtime defeat to Goucher in the season opener for both teams Friday night.
The Gophers' Megan Kelleher scored on a high, looping shot just outside the box that got over the hands of Gwynedd goalie
Emily McCullough three minutes into the extra session.
The golden goal marked the end of a back-and-forth affair that saw the Griffins stave off two Goucher shots that found the post and one off the crossbar in the second half.
McCullough entered to start the second half where she made two saves.
Daniella Repkoe played the first 45 minutes and recorded four stops for GMercyU. Gwynedd had a 3-to-1 corner kick edge but were outshot by the Gophers, 17-7, including 10-3 in the second stanza alone.
The team resumes action on Sunday when they head up to Lycoming for a 2 p.m. start.
