GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy Women's Lacrosse Team celebrated Senior Day but it was Immaculata who crashed the party with a 21-11 decision in an Atlantic East Conference matchup Saturday morning.
Prior to the game, the team and coaching staff honored
Jamie McCarney, its lone senior, along with her family. This season, she was voted one of the captains on the squad while starting all 14 games so far this season.
As for the game, the Mighty Macs gained an early lead and slowly built on it. Layne Kennedy scored five of her game-high seven goals in the second half. Maura Murray and Bailey Krewson each doled out four assists for the visitors.
Victoria Braeunle led the Griffins with six points on four goals and two assists. The sophomore added six draws.
Victoria Mollitor added for goals while
Anna Grace Bernicker scored twice.
After Braeunle's second goal of the first half to make it a 4-3 game, Immaculata outscored Gwynedd 7-3 over the final 19 minutes before the break. A 6-2 run by the visitors to open the second stanza put the Griffins in a nine-goal deficit.
In goal,
Julia Smith recorded seven saves for the Griffins while Emily Schumann made nine.
Gwynedd Mercy plays at Marywood on Wednesday in a conference showdown.
