Baseball Edged Out By Cabrini In Atlantic East Twinbill

RADNOR, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Baseball team opened Atlantic East play but fell in a conference doubleheader at Cabrini University on Saturday. The Cavaliers took both games by the score of 7-6. The nightcap would go thirteen innings.

Jason Mulvey was 5-for-10 on the day with a home-run and four RBIs. Brother Nick Mulvey recorded four hits on the afternoon.

Dave Tatoian and Justin Curtin added a pair of hits in the nightcap while Sachael Sciarretta scored four runs on the day a pair in each game.

Game one
Trailing 2-0 in the third inning, Sciarretta put the Griffins on the scoreboard with an RBI to score Nick Mulvey. However, Cabrini would add a run in both the fourth and fifth innings to lead 4-1.

In the sixth, Gwynedd plated four runs started by a Curtin sac fly to score Sciarretta. Jason Mulvey would add a two-run single to score Jack Jamison and Josh Lopez. Nick Mulvey would then give GMercyU the 5-4 lead with a single to score Tatoian. Again, the Cavaliers answered in the home half of the inning to tie the game.

Tatoian would put the Griffins ahead in the seventh with a sac fly rbi to score Sciarretta. In the bottom half, the Cavaliers had the sacks full with one out. An error on a potential inning-ending double play ball allowed a pair of two runs for the 7-6 walkoff defeat.

Starting pitcher R.J. Boyle worked five innings, striking out three. Nick Mulvey had three hits while Sciarretta scored twice.

Game two
In the nightcap, Jason Mulvey cranked a two-out solo shot in the third put the Griffins ahead 1-0. In the fourth, Curtin knocked in Sciarretta to up the lead to 2-0. Cabrini would answer in the fifth with a pair to tie the game 2-2. The score would remain tied until the top of the eighth when the Griffins scored three runs thanks to RBIs from Tatoian and both Mulveys for a 5-2 lead.

The Cavaliers would respond again with a run in the eighth and a pinch hit two-run homerun in the ninth to send the game to extra innings tied at 5-5.

An Evan Miller sac fly rbi in the 11th inning put Gwynedd back on top, but a Cabrini countered with an RBI double in the home half to extend the contest.  Cabrini would notch their second walkoff decision on the day on an RBI single with the bases loaded and two outs.

Starting pitcher Nick DeRitis worked into the eighth inning and struck out nine, both career highs.

The Griffins return back to action on Tuesday when they host Haverford College at 3:30 p.m.
