Royals Take Down Griffins In Championship

2019 Gwynedd Mercy Tip-Off Tournament

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy fell in the championship game of its own tip-off tournament to nationally-ranked Scranton, 91-74, on Saturday afternoon.

The Griffins hit 11 three pointers on the day, three coming from Denise Sacco who finished with 11 points and a spot on the all-tournament team. Shannon Carroll added 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds. As a team, GMercyU forced 24 Royal turnovers that led to 17 points.

Tournament MVP Melissa Shurina finished with 23 points on 6-of-10 from beyond the arc to help Scranton build a sizable lead in the first half. Teammate Makenzie Mason added 16 points and 13 rebounds while Sofia Recupero kicked in 10 points and 10 caroms.

The Royals shot over 45% in the first two quarters, making nine threes as they held a 60-34 lead at halftime. The lead swelled to as much as 77-47 late in the third before the Griffins made some moves to make things interesting down the stretch.

A three from Jill Kane at the 6:25 mark of the fourth capped a 16-3 Gwynedd run to get within 17. Later the team clawed to an 83-72 score with 3:08 left to play. However, the Royals held Gwynedd without a field goal the rest of the way to help ice the score.

Elise Sylvester put together a stat line of seven points, four steals, four rebounds, and three assists.

Gwynedd Mercy welcomes Arcadia to The Griffin Complex on Tuesday for the fifth annual "Battle of Route 309" in a 6 p.m. tip.
