GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy saw Bryn Athyn score three unanswered goals send the Griffins to a 3-2 defeat Wednesday afternoon.
Two goals from
Kevin Bowers in the game's first 23 minutes looked to put the Griffins on track for their first win on the year. The sophomore made it 1-0 as he took a pass from
Hugh Lynch, created a little space in the box and fired home his first of the season at the 10:22 mark.
Later,
Abdul Bangura was pulled down on a near breakaway, resulting in a penalty kick. Bowers stepped up and converted on his first penalty goal for a 2-0 lead.
Just under 14 minutes later, a bit of bad luck hit GMercyU as a throw in down in the defensive zone was last touched by Bryn Athyn's Chris Mitchell resulting in a few deflections that got past Gwynedd goalie
Kace Peters. The Lions were awarded a penalty kick in the 40th minute where Matheus Souza tied things up at 2-2, which stayed that way into the break.
Joe Duffy started the second half in net for Gwynedd, but Souza struck again as he tapped in a short cross. Zach Brock looked to center from the right endline, and his pass went under the hands of Duffy right to Souza.
Gwynedd pressed the rest of the second and a key spot late in the game. A free kick from 30 yards out was sent into the box with less than a minute remaining.
Tyler Bascone got a good piece on a header but it went right into the hands of goalie Shane McGurdy.
Peters finished the game with six saves while Duffy had one. McCurdy recorded two in the second half.
The team travels to Albright on Saturday.
