Softball Battles In CSAC Tournament

Griffins win the first game, fall in the second

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Softball team split a pair of games on Friday in the Colonial States Athletic Conference Softball Tournament hosted by the Griffins. This is the sixth year in a row GMercyU has competed in the tournament and first as the top seed and host.

The Griffins opened up the day with a 3-0 shutout victory over the fourth-seeded Neumann University, but fell in the nightcap to the third seed Immaculata University 6-0.

Gwynedd will play Neumann once again in an elimination game tomorrow at 10 a.m. with the winner moving on the championship series with Immaculata.

The day's first game saw Keani Hindle drive in all four runs for the Mighty Macs in a 4-0 win over second-seeded Cabrini.

Against Neumann in the second game of the day, Gwynedd scored three runs, all with two outs in the sixth inning to break a scoreless contest. With two down, Lauren Waller singled home Becki Christoffers for the game's first run. Tori Sherwood followed Waller with a two-run triple to score both Waller and pinch runner Tara Matteo.  It was Sherwood's second triple of the game and second time this season accomplishing the feat.

In the circle, CSAC Pitcher of the Year Melissa Hess struck out a pair and scattered four hits to earn the complete game shutout victory.

The Knights rebounded to knock out Cabrini, 7-4, in an elimination game.

In the nightcap, CSAC Rookie of the Year Emma Bischoff held the Griffins to just a single hit as the Mighty Macs scored a run in the third and five over the final two innings to give GMercyU their first loss of the CSAC tournament. Waller's single in the seventh inning broke up the rookie's no-hit bid.

CSAC Player of the Year Annemarie Bartow went 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI's including a two-run double in the seventh.

Action resumes tomorrow at 10 a.m. with Gwynedd Mercy and Neumann in an elimination game.
